A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Hokkaido early Monday morning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency and the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred shortly before 5:30 AM local time at a depth of approximately 80 kilometers. While no tsunami warnings were issued, the event adds to a series of recent strong tremors affecting Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency had previously warned of an increased risk of a magnitude 8.0 or stronger earthquake following a M7.7 quake off the coast of Iwate Prefecture on April 20th.
