Kaohsiung Yuanjhonggang Wetland Bird Mating and Breeding Season, Public Urged Not to Disturb

(Kaohsiung, CNA reporter Tsai Meng-huan, April 26) As temperatures rise, Kaohsiung's Yuanjhonggang Wetland enters the peak season for egret family birds' mating and breeding. Bird calls echo from among the mangroves, and birds are constantly busy building nests. When enjoying the beauty of nature, the public should adhere to the principle of non-disturbance, allowing the birds to breed safely.

Kaohsiung City Public Works Bureau's Parks Department today issued a press release stating that Yuanjhonggang Wetland is currently in the peak mating and breeding season for egret family birds, including Great Egrets, Little Egrets, Cattle Egrets, and Black-crowned Night Herons, which are successively entering breeding status.

The Parks Department stated that at Yuanjhonggang Wetland, male birds can be observed occupying nesting sites first. When a female bird approaches, the male bird will perform a series of 'courting rituals,' appearing vibrant and colorful, with loud and varied songs, and peculiar and exaggerated dances. During this process, both parties will also confirm each other through interaction and 'pair dancing,' with elegant and rhythmic movements.

When the male bird brings a branch as a 'love token,' it also symbolizes the beginning of building a nest together to solidify the pair bond. The entire courtship process, from probing and interaction to successful pairing, is full of rhythm and change.

The Parks Department stated that Yuanjhonggang Wetland, located in the coastal area, is an important ecological node in Kaohsiung, maintaining a stable and diverse habitat environment over the long term. It not only nurtures a rich population of birds but also provides a good living space for fish, crabs, and various wetland organisms, making it a rare and important place in the city that retains a complete ecological landscape.

The Parks Department reminds the public that spring is the best time to observe wetland ecology, but when appreciating the beauty of nature, the principle of non-disturbance should be followed.
