Don't Take Chances with Drunk Cycling; Taoyuan Police Department Lists it as Key Enforcement Target

The Taoyuan Precinct announced today that riding "slow vehicles" such as bicycles or micro electric two-wheeled vehicles under the influence of alcohol is also a violation and has been designated as a key enforcement area. So far in April, four violations have been detected, with penalties up to NT$2,400, and potentially even criminal charges for public endangerment.

The Taoyuan Precinct of the Taoyuan City Police Department issued a press release stating that while the concept of "don't drink and drive" has become prevalent in recent years, some people still take chances, believing that riding "slow vehicles" like bicycles or micro electric two-wheeled vehicles can evade drunk driving enforcement. According to the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, drivers of slow vehicles whose alcohol test results exceed the limit will be fined between NT$1,200 and NT$2,400; refusing an alcohol test will result in a heavy fine of NT$4,800.

The Taoyuan Precinct stated that it has listed drunk riding of slow vehicles as a key enforcement item. So far in April, a total of four violations of drunk riding slow vehicles have been detected. In addition to issuing tickets according to law, the police will immediately impound the vehicles. If a person illegally rides a micro electric two-wheeled vehicle or electric-assisted bicycle, which are considered "motorized transportation tools," with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.25mg/L or more, they will also face criminal charges for public endangerment and be prosecuted according to law.

The police appeal to the public that driving cars or motorcycles, or riding slow vehicles and personal mobility devices such as electric scooters, after drinking is dangerous behavior. After drinking, be sure to seek a designated driver or take public transportation. The Taoyuan Precinct will strengthen enforcement and publicity in accident-prone and drinking-prone road sections within its jurisdiction, hoping that the public will abide by the law and not take risks.
