A 31-year-old man surnamed Lin, who attempted to rob the CTBC Bank in Taipei with a BB gun, was previously arrested for running an illegal gambling den. During police questioning, he claimed he committed the robbery to repay heavy debts and support his children.

Yesterday, Lin wore a mask and carried a BB gun and a fake grenade into the bank near Zhongxiao East Road, demanding 10 million NTD. The attempt failed due to cooperation between the bank and the police. Although he held the gun to the manager's head, police quickly realized the weapon was not a real firearm after a steel pellet fell out. Lin, who lives nearby, confessed his motive was owing 7 million NTD due to failed investments, coupled with rent and the pressure of raising two children. He had been arrested in March for operating a professional mahjong gambling den. Police are moving to indict him for robbery and are requesting his detention.
