Correctional Agency Investigates and Handles Prison Management Failures

Taipei, April 25 (CNA) — Media reports alleged that inmates at the Tainan Detention Center misused smuggled mobile phones and that an assault occurred at Wuling Outer Prison. The Agency of Corrections stated today that these issues have been thoroughly investigated and addressed to eliminate illegal practices.

According to reports, an inmate at Tainan Detention Center managed to use another inmate's phone, while at Wuling Outer Prison, an inmate was beaten by another for refusing to provide cigarettes, highlighting lax management.

The Agency of Corrections issued a press release stating that the Tainan Detention Center conducted a surprise inspection in January, seizing mobile phones and other prohibited items. An investigation revealed that since October last year, inmates exploited work opportunities to steal stored items. Four custodial staff members were found to have violated service protocols. Two are under further investigation for potential misconduct and have been reassigned. Eight inmates involved were disciplined and referred to the Tainan District Prosecutors Office.

Regarding Wuling Outer Prison, an investigation found that in late August last year, a dispute over cigarettes led to one inmate being assaulted by another. The victim was hospitalized, and the aggressor was strictly punished. The victim was transferred to another facility in September following an application.

The Agency of Corrections emphasized that it would continue to supervise surprise inspections and block contraband. Future plans include investing in more technology to enhance security and discipline, aiming to restore public confidence in the correctional system.
