(Central News Agency reporter Chao Li-yen, Taichung 24th) The Taichung City Government is promoting the "Enterovirus 71 Vaccine Subsidy Program," providing vaccinations for vulnerable infants and young children starting April 27. Each person can receive up to 3 doses, with 79 contracted clinics across the city, and 7 districts offering vaccination services through local health centers.

The enterovirus epidemic is escalating, and the Centers for Disease Control predicts it will enter its peak season in June. The Taichung City Health Bureau told the Central News Agency reporter that this is the first time they are subsidizing the Enterovirus 71 vaccine for vulnerable infants and young children, such as those from low-income households. Vaccinations will be available from April 27 to December 15. Infants and young children aged 2 months to under 2 years who are registered in Taichung City, or are housed in care facilities, are eligible for the subsidy.

The Health Bureau pointed out that vaccination sites have been planned in all administrative districts across the city, with 79 contracted medical institutions for the enterovirus vaccine. Additionally, in Waipu District, Xinshe District, Shigang District, Daan District, Dadu District, Heping District, and Lishan area, where there are currently no cooperative clinics, local health centers will provide vaccination services.

Pediatrician Dr. Shih Sheng-huan stated that the city government's subsidy amount is NT$4300 per dose, allowing children under 2 years old to receive up to three full doses. The subsidy content enables children to receive a good vaccine that offers the most complete protection, with proven efficacy for 5 years, as jointly promoted by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society of Taiwan and the Taiwan Society of Neonatology. This protection can help them through the high-risk period before age 6, and the vaccine has been published in international academic journals and approved by other countries.

Dr. Wang Hsing-an, Director of the Neonatology Department at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, noted that the Enterovirus 71 vaccine can be administered to children aged 2 months to under 6 years, regardless of whether they have been previously infected. Trials have confirmed that two doses of the enterovirus vaccine administered with a 2-month interval produce higher antibodies, similar to other routine childhood vaccines (such as the pentavalent vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine) which are also administered with a 2-month interval.
