(CNA Reporter Lin Chang-shun, Taipei, 24th) A monk surnamed Chen at a temple in Xizhi District, New Taipei City, got into a conflict with a fellow monk surnamed Wang over washing dishes, tackling Wang to the ground and causing him to hit the back of his head and fall into a coma. Wang later died after being sent to the hospital. The citizen judges court of the Shilin District Court sentenced Chen to 10 years in prison today for the crime of assault causing death.

The verdict pointed out that Chen and Wang were both monks practicing at Baiyun Temple in Xizhi District, New Taipei City, jointly responsible for kitchen meals and cleaning duties in the temple. At around 6 a.m. on April 9, 2024, Chen had a dispute with Wang over cleaning the kitchen environment at Baiyun Temple and pushed Wang down.

After Wang got up, Chen tackled him to the ground again, causing Wang to fall backward and hit the back of his head, briefly losing consciousness. He regained consciousness, got up to eat, and returned to his bedroom.

The verdict stated that at around 11 a.m. that day, other monks at Baiyun Temple found Wang lying unconscious on his bedroom floor and immediately called an ambulance to send him to Tri-Service General Hospital for treatment. However, Wang died at around 4:47 p.m. on April 17 of the same year due to head trauma and brain injury.

After investigation by the Shilin District Prosecutors Office, Chen was indicted for the crime of assault causing death under the Criminal Code and transferred to the Shilin District Court's citizen judges court for trial. The court held that Chen's actions were indeed out of intentional assault on the victim, thereby causing the victim's death, and sentenced Chen to 10 years in prison according to the crime of assault causing death. The case can be appealed. (Editor: Chen Jen-hua) 1150424
