(CNA, Taipei, 23rd) The Taipei stock market opened higher but trended lower today, closing down 164.32 points at 37,714.15, a decline of 0.43%. The turnover was 1.401497 trillion New Taiwan Dollars.

The weighted index opened at 37,971.69, reaching an intraday high of 38,921.95 and a low of 37,164.44. The index excluding financial stocks stood at 34,031.83, down 138.87 points.

Price movements among the eight major sectors: Cement and ceramics down 2.23%, foods down 0.93%, plastics down 2.22%, textiles down 1.16%, machinery and electronics down 0.27%, paper down 2.51%, construction up 0.72%, and financials down 0.77%.

Total buy orders stood at 30,103,330 lots, sell orders at 22,586,713 lots, and traded volume reached 18,758,181 lots.

At the close, 141 companies saw their stock prices rise, 914 declined, and 43 remained unchanged.
