(Central News Agency reporter Wang Hong-kuo, New Taipei, 23rd) The Transportation Committee of the Legislative Yuan inspected the narrowness of the Danjiang Bridge motorcycle lane this morning. KMT Legislator Hong Meng-kai questioned that the Highway Bureau has 28 contingency plans and should release them to reassure the public. The Highway Bureau stated that a movable barrier will be set up next to the motorcycle lane and will be in place before the bridge opens.

The Transportation Committee visited the Bali and Tamsui District Offices for inspection this morning. Deputy Minister of Transportation Chen Yen-po, Director General of the Highway Bureau Lin Fu-shan, and personnel from related units attended. Local representatives including KMT Councilors Chen Wei-chieh and Chen Chia-chi, DPP Councilor Cheng Yu-en, and local ward chiefs were also present to express their concern.

The Highway Bureau explained that the Danjiang Bridge is part of the Provincial Highway 61 expressway system. By regulation, general motorcycles (ordinary heavy and below) are not allowed. However, considering the short-distance travel needs between Tamsui and Bali, a dedicated motorcycle lane with physical separation is planned outside the main lanes of the expressway.

The lane's cross-sectional design width is 2.5 meters, meeting highway route design standards. Accident handling and personnel rescue will be carried out using the pedestrian and bicycle spaces. Accident vehicle removal will be towed from the main lanes.

The bridge management center will also monitor wind speed, other meteorological information, road conditions, and bridge safety, and issue messages through Variable Message Signs (CMS). Regarding the Danhai Light Rail Bali line, the Railway Bureau stated it would be submitted for review after the approval of the Danhai Phase II revised plan.

Lin Fu-shan emphasized that the Danjiang Bridge requires observation for a period after opening because of its unique geographical location and structural safety design. Therefore, 28 scenario simulations have been conducted and reviewed. This includes short-term improvements for wind noise using taped strips, with long-term improvements scheduled by the end of August.

He added that the motorcycle lane design complies with standards and drills have been completed. In the future, the installation of movable barriers in the space next to the motorcycle lane close to the pedestrian and bicycle paths will be studied. When Hong Meng-kai pressed on the spacing of the barriers, noting that accidents won't always conveniently occur right next to one for easy rescue, Lin stated that it is still under evaluation and planning, but will be completed before opening.

Chen Yen-po noted that the Danjiang Bridge is new, and people are quite unfamiliar with it, including how cars should navigate towards Tamsui or Bali, and how motorcycles and bicycles get on the bridge. Combined with its special features, such as potentially strong winds or certain vibrations, the Highway Bureau will subsequently issue a guideline on how to use the bridge.

Hong Meng-kai stated that he had just heard about the 28 contingency plans, which "even we elected representatives are unaware of." He suggested that if these plans have been drilled or if certain information is grasped, releasing it appropriately could somewhat make the public feel more at ease. (Editor: Lin Shu-hui) 1150423
