Darren Wang Asked Friend to Use Police and Gangs for Background Checks; Sentenced to 6 Months Alongside Girlfriend in First Trial

(CNA Reporter Tsao Ya-yen, New Taipei, 22nd) Actor Darren Wang (Wang Ta-lu) used a friend to ask police officer Liu Chu-jung to look up the personal information of Chen Chih-ming, the ringleader of a draft-dodging syndicate. He also used gangsters to look up personal information to help his girlfriend collect a debt. The New Taipei District Court today sentenced Wang and his girlfriend to six months in prison each for violating the Personal Data Protection Act; Liu Chu-jung was sentenced to 1 year and 4 months for document forgery.

The New Taipei District Court handed down the verdict today. Darren Wang and his girlfriend, Que Mu-xuan, were found guilty of violating the Personal Data Protection Act, and each was sentenced to six months in prison, which can be commuted to a fine. Liu Chu-jung was sentenced to 1 year and 4 months for document forgery. Wang's friend, surnamed Yu, and Four Seas Gang leader, surnamed Chen, were sentenced to 3 months for violating the PDPA, which can also be commuted to a fine.

The case originated when Darren Wang allegedly spent NT$3.6 million to hire Chen Chih-ming, the mastermind of a draft evasion syndicate, to arrange for him to dodge military service. However, Chen was arrested for another case and lost contact. Wang, believing he had been scammed, sought help from his friend Yu. In February of last year, Yu contacted Liu Chu-jung, the then-acting captain of the Third Investigation Squad of the Taipei City Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division. Liu allegedly used the false pretext of 'assisting the Beitou Precinct in investigating an officer's leak case' to log into the police system, queried Chen Chih-ming's personal information, and leaked it to Wang.

Prosecutors also discovered that while Wang's girlfriend, Que Mu-xuan, was a live streamer, she was defrauded of over NT$4 million by a man surnamed Pan. Because Pan was serving time in prison, Wang, Que, and Yu created a WeChat group in November 2024 titled 'What was lost! Must be taken back!' intending to collect the debt from Pan's family.

Yu then entrusted a man surnamed Chen, a gang leader of the Four Seas Gang's Hai Ying faction, to help. Chen then bought Pan's personal information, as well as the addresses and phone numbers of his relatives and friends, from a land registration agent through others. Upon receiving this, Yu reported back to the group.

During the trial, neither Darren Wang nor his girlfriend pleaded guilty. They both stated they had no direct contact with Chen and had not instructed Chen to look up others' personal information. Liu admitted to logging into the police system with a false reason but did not plead guilty to the leak, insisting it was sent by mistake. (Editor: Huang Ming-hsi)
