As enterovirus cases continue to rise, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen announced today the launch of the 'Enterovirus 71 Vaccine Subsidy Project' from April 27 to December 15. This program will provide vaccinations for infants from vulnerable groups to lower the risk of severe illness. Mayor Lu noted during a municipal meeting that enterovirus peak season usually occurs between late May and mid-June. Since the vaccine is not yet covered by national health insurance, the cost of nearly TWD 10,000 for a full series is a significant burden for low-income families. Health Bureau Director Tseng Tzu-chan explained that the subsidy targets infants aged 2 months to under 2 years who are residents of Taichung and from low-income households or in care facilities. The city government will review the results of this initial project to determine if it should be expanded in the future.
