(Central News Agency, San Francisco, April 21, Comprehensive Foreign Report) E-commerce and cloud computing giant Amazon announced an additional investment of up to $5 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic, deepening their partnership.
According to an AFP report, this latest investment brings Amazon's total investment in Anthropic to $13 billion, according to a statement released by the two companies. Amazon further stated that if Anthropic meets specific performance targets, future investments could reach an additional $20 billion.
San Francisco-based Anthropic, in turn, pledged to spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies over the next 10 years to support its AI research and development.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated in a press release: "We need to build infrastructure capable of keeping pace with rapidly growing demand. Our partnership with Amazon will enable us to continue advancing AI research while bringing the Claude model to customers."
Anthropic revealed in early April that its annualized revenue had doubled from the previous quarter, exceeding $30 billion, surpassing rival OpenAI for the first time.
Amodei also visited the White House last week to meet with government officials, where the atmosphere was noticeably more relaxed than before. In February this year, Anthropic had angered U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth by insisting that its technology should not be used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapon systems.
The White House spokesperson told AFP: "We discussed opportunities for cooperation and common approaches and agreements to address related challenges as this technology expands."
These comments indicate a shift in the White House's attitude. Months earlier, after Anthropic refused to grant the Pentagon unconditional use of the Claude model, President Trump had instructed government agencies to "immediately cease" using the company's technology.
Anthropic subsequently filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration and challenged Hegseth's decision to place it on a "supply chain risk" list.
In addition, Anthropic released its latest AI model earlier this month, but considering potential cybersecurity risks, it is not yet available to the public. (Editor: Liu Shu-qin) 1150421
