TrendForce stated that the global AI-specific optical transceiver module market is entering a phase of rapid growth, with market size projected to expand from US$16.5 billion in 2025 to US$26 billion in 2026, an annual increase of over 57%. This strong growth not only stems from specification upgrades but also reflects the accelerated construction of AI data centers, presenting a structural reorganization for the entire optical communication supply chain.

TrendForce's latest report points out that as data centers continue to expand, the demand for optical transceiver modules operating at 800G and above, used for AI server cluster interconnects, has significantly increased. North American hyperscale data centers have maintained year-over-year traffic growth exceeding 30%, prompting cloud giants like Google, Microsoft, and Meta to increase deployments of graphics processing units (GPUs) and AI servers, thereby driving procurement demand for high-speed optical connections. However, supply chain pressures have simultaneously emerged.

TrendForce noted that current expansion of optical transceiver module production faces several major bottlenecks. Firstly, key optoelectronic chips such as EML (Electro-absorption Modulated Laser) and CW-LD (Continuous Wave Laser) are experiencing supply tightness due to production capacity allocation issues. High-precision processes like optical alignment also limit production scaling. Furthermore, power consumption and heat dissipation issues continue to affect overall system design and implementation timelines.

To mitigate supply risks, upstream suppliers and major system manufacturers, led by NVIDIA, have adjusted their procurement models. They are beginning to adopt strategic long-term contracts to secure key materials, gradually reducing reliance on spot market purchases. Simultaneously, technological routes are accelerating towards low-power Linear Pluggable Optics (LPO) and integrated silicon photonics solutions, aiming to replace traditional high-power DSP (Digital Signal Processor) architectures to alleviate power and heat dissipation pressures.

TrendForce analyzes that the growth momentum in the AI optical transceiver module market has evolved from single product specification upgrades to three major parallel trends: "market scale expansion," "technology generation switching," and "application scenario extension." As the 1.6T generation gradually enters mass production, along with the shaping demand for edge computing and Data Center Interconnect (DCI), the market for 800G and 1.6T ZR/ZR+ coherent optical modules will expand concurrently.

TrendForce pointed out that in response to the tight supply of components for AI optical transceiver modules, major international manufacturers such as Coherent, Lumentum, and AAOI, as well as Taiwanese companies including Unimicron and Walsin Technology, have initiated capacity expansion and technology layout. For the Taiwanese optical communication supply chain, this upgrade cycle brings clear structural opportunities. Taiwanese firms possess existing foundations in wafer foundry, EML laser chips, passive optical components, and module packaging and testing, and have gradually made progress in silicon photonics and LPO technologies.

TrendForce anticipates that 2026 to 2027 will be a critical period for Taiwanese firms to secure positions in the 1.6T generation supply chain. Their success in gaining design-in approvals from Tier 1 clients will directly determine their subsequent market share performance. (Editor: Yang Lanxuan) 1150420
