Ministry of Foreign Affairs: European Entry/Exit System to Launch on the 10th, Urging Public to Allow Extra Time

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a regular press conference this morning, where Huang Junyao mentioned that according to the announcement by the European Commission, the European "Entry/Exit System" (EES) has been gradually implemented since October 12, 2025, and is scheduled for full activation on April 10th this year. Huang Junyao explained that the EES aims to strengthen EU border management through electronic means. The EES automated verification system will record biometric data such as fingerprints and facial photos upon a traveler's first entry. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises the public to allow ample time for customs clearance or transit in Schengen countries to protect their rights, and to pay close attention to the latest announcements on the official websites of the EU and Schengen countries before traveling to stay updated on regulations and travel advisories. Huang Junyao pointed out that currently, three European countries offer automated electronic customs clearance (e-Gate) for entry and exit: the Czech Republic, Italy, and Germany. Among these, Italy and Germany will require fingerprint and facial biometric data registration upon first entry after the EES activation to use e-Gates. However, due to system integration issues, the Czech Republic will temporarily suspend e-Gate access for non-EU countries, including Taiwan, in the short term.
