A 27-year-old man named Guo was driving a tractor-trailer along the inner lane of Xinbei Boulevard Section 6 towards Taipei at around 6 a.m. on April 6th. He allegedly lost control, crashed into the median, and then swerved outwards, hitting a pedestrian at the intersection and injuring two security guards who were sent to the hospital.
Due to the strong impact of the accident vehicle, it not only broke a fire hydrant and road sign nearby but also crashed into a construction site in the adjacent Wenzizhen redevelopment zone, leaving the scene in disarray.
As the victim's body was severely damaged and unidentifiable, and no identification documents were found, confirming his identity was difficult. Police initially released a photo of the victim's suspected mobile phone and surveillance footage of his appearance, but received no leads.
Linkou Precinct stated today that through verifying phone numbers using the SIM card and confirmation from the telecom operator, the user of the number was identified as Vu, a 35-year-old Vietnamese male. Contact was then made with Vu's wife, who resides in Shulin District, to come to the police station for identification. Finally, through clothing and surveillance footage, the victim's identity was confirmed.
Preliminary understanding indicates that Vu was a migrant worker, and his wife is also a Vietnamese migrant worker. Vu was reportedly on his way to work when the accident occurred. However, for prudence, police are still sending the victim's fingerprints to the Immigration Agency for comparison to confirm the victim's identity as Vu. As for the driver Guo, although he claimed the accident was caused by skidding, police are still investigating him for crimes including negligent homicide and have transferred him to the prosecutor's office for investigation.
