Central News Agency Message (CNA Reporter Huang Chiao-wen, Taipei, 20th) The public has raised concerns that the motorcycle lane on the Danjiang Bridge is too narrow and poses potential safety risks. In addition to expressing concern today, legislators also mentioned that some roads have been changed to mixed traffic lanes in recent years. The Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB) stated that this will be discussed at an upcoming seminar and suggested that the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) include motorcycle lanes in the road safety audit mechanism.

The Legislative Yuan's Transportation Committee today invited Lin Shin-der, Chairman of the TTSB, to present a business overview report and take questions.

A series of pre-opening events for the Danjiang Bridge have been launched recently, including a road run on the 18th and a cycling event on the 19th, allowing registered participants to get a sneak peek at the bridge and see the bridge structure construction up close. The design of the motorcycle lane on the bridge has recently drawn attention. The Highway Bureau stated yesterday that according to highway route design specifications, a separated design is used outside the shoulder of expressways, with a minimum lane width of 2.5 meters. The Danjiang Bridge motorcycle lane uses physical separation with a width of 2.5 meters, which complies with the regulations. A pre-opening safety advisory committee has been established, and experts and scholars have been invited to review and optimize the operations.

Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Hung Meng-kai expressed concern during his interpellation today that some people found the motorcycle lane relatively too narrow after getting on the bridge. When a police motorcycle passed by, it felt like the lane was full. If a collision occurs on the bridge, it could be dangerous. Some media reports even used the headline "dog path" to describe it, meaning it is relatively small.

Regarding Hung Meng-kai's inquiry on whether suggestions have been made to highway authorities or regarding road design on how wide current dedicated motorcycle lanes should be to meet safety standards, Lin Shin-der stated that the Road Safety Audit (RSA) mechanism was mentioned in today's report, and the TTSB might expand its suggestions to the MOTC. It is not only for car lanes; the motorcycle lane part may also need to be considered.

Taiwan People's Party legislator Chen Ching-lung demanded that the TTSB should not only conduct post-accident investigations but also put forward relevant suggestions to the MOTC and the Highway Bureau.

Hung Meng-kai pointed out whether it is necessary to keep dedicated motorcycle lanes or if they can be changed to a mixed traffic lane design. He mentioned that some people believe restricting motorcycles to dedicated lanes is nominally for protection but carries a discriminatory connotation. In recent years, some road designs have canceled dedicated motorcycle lanes and managed them as mixed traffic lanes, requiring all vehicles to drive according to the speed limit.

Lin Shin-der stated that the TTSB regularly holds transportation safety seminars for aviation, waterways, railways, and highways. Relevant issues will be included in subsequent discussions and exchanged with highway authorities.

The Danjiang Bridge, connecting Tamsui and Bali in New Taipei City, crosses the mouth of the Tamsui River. The main bridge has a total length of about 920 meters and a main span of 450 meters, making it the world's longest asymmetric cable-stayed bridge with a single pylon. Designed by the internationally renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, it is expected to officially open to traffic on May 12. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150420
