The Mazu parade of Beigang Chaotian Temple in Yunlin will debut on May 5th, with the live art floats being a major highlight. This year, with the support of various sponsors, 24 children from the Yunlin Ji Fu Center will take to the art floats for the first time on May 6th to participate in the procession and understand Mazu culture.

Yunlin Ji Fu Center Vice Chairman Xie Qifeng said that the Mazu parade of Beigang Chaotian Temple is a nationally important folk custom, with a two-day procession on the 19th and 20th of the third lunar month. The art float parade lasts for five consecutive days, with the live art floats featuring children dressed as deities. The cost of self-funded makeup and preparation of various small gifts for good fortune is beyond the reach of Ji Fu children from families with poor economic conditions.

Xie Qifeng stated that thanks to local resource assistance, 24 Ji Fu children can now ride on the art float. Furthermore, the Yunlin Xin Shenghuo Development Association and Beigang Chuangyi Culture Association, upon learning of this, offered their services free of charge to help the children realize their dreams, allowing them to deeply understand and experience local folk culture, and pass on traditional religious beliefs and culture.

Liao Zhiwen, director of the Yunlin Ji Fu Center, pointed out that from field research, hands-on model building of art floats, to riding on the floats, these are all first-time experiences for Ji Fu students. On May 6th, the 24 students will ride the art float in two shifts. Ji Fu members also handcrafted various lucky charms to share with the public on the event day.

Additionally, Ji Fu students Wang Peiqin, Zhuang Jinbao, and Xu Zhichao spent six months conducting field interviews with art float cultural historians, actually participating in the Beigang art float parade, and visiting the "Shen Gong Yi Jing" craft exhibition to understand the historical context of Beigang's local faith and art float culture. They even assisted in creating painted art float model cars. (Editor: Chen Renhua) 1150420
