(Central News Agency, Yilan, April 18) A 91-year-old woman named Zhang in Yilan had been dead for a considerable time. Her son, with whom she lived, is suspected of concealing his mother's death to fraudulently claim her old-age pension and has been brought to justice. After interrogation last night, prosecutors filed a request with the court for his detention on charges of forgery and fraud, but the court ruled for his release without bail. Prosecutors plan to appeal.

It is understood that Ms. Zhang previously lived with her retired son, also named Zhang. Her daughter, who lives nearby, had been unable to contact her mother for years and was repeatedly blocked by her brother when she tried to visit.

Following an investigation by the Luodong police at the request of the Yilan District Prosecutors Office, police obtained a search warrant on the evening of April 16 and found that Ms. Zhang had been dead for a significant period at her residence. Further review of surveillance footage and medical records revealed that Ms. Zhang had no medical treatment records in recent years, and her monthly pension was collected by her son.

The Yilan District Prosecutors Office stated that after the prosecutor completed the autopsy procedure yesterday and apprehended and interrogated the defendant, Zhang, they determined that he was heavily suspected of forgery and fraud, and that there were grounds and necessity for detention due to repeated fraudulent acts and the risk of evidence tampering. Therefore, they legally requested detention and prohibition of communication and visitation from the Yilan District Court. However, the District Court ruled for his release without bail, and prosecutors will appeal. (Editor: Xu Ruicheng) 1140418
