(CNA Washington, April 15, [2026] Compiled Foreign News) US President Donald Trump said today that Beijing has agreed not to transport weapons to Iran, despite reports that China intends to provide new air defense systems to Iran. In addition, Trump expects Chinese President Xi Jinping to "give me a big hug" at the upcoming Trump-Xi summit.

The New York Post reported that Trump further stated today that Xi Jinping is "very happy" about his efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz energy transport route, even though Chinese officials had criticized the US blockade as "dangerous and irresponsible" just the day before.

Trump wrote on his social media platform "Truth Social" today, "China is very happy that I permanently opened the Strait of Hormuz. I did it for them, and for the whole world. This situation will not happen again, and they have agreed not to transport weapons to Iran."

Trump also wrote in his post, "When I go there in a few weeks, Chairman Xi will give me a big hug, and we are cooperating smartly and very smoothly! Isn't this better than fighting??? But remember, we are very good at fighting, and if we have to, we are far better than any other country!!!"

Trump and Xi Jinping are expected to hold leadership talks in Beijing on May 14th and 15th. This meeting was originally scheduled for late March but was postponed due to the US attack on Iran.

More than one-fifth of global oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz annually, and China relies on this energy corridor for about 45% to 50% of its crude oil imports.

Although some media reported that US intelligence believes China is preparing to provide man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) to Iran to help Tehran defend against possible US attacks, Trump stated in an interview with Fox Business Network aired today that he had written to Xi Jinping asking China not to provide weapons to Iran, and Xi Jinping replied that he had not done so.
