The nine-in-one local elections are scheduled to take place at the end of the year. The Taichung District Prosecutors Office announced today that it has investigated a case of election betting that used the decentralized prediction platform Polymarket. Four suspects involved were apprehended, and are being investigated for alleged violations of the Public Officials Election and Recall Act and other laws.

The Taichung District Prosecutors Office issued a press release explaining that it recently received intelligence indicating that the decentralized prediction platform Polymarket had set up betting pools for the local public officials elections to be held on November 28. The platform offered "2026 Taiwanese Local Elections: PartyWinner" as a target, inducing unspecified individuals to bet on election results using virtual currency.

The Taichung District Prosecutors Office directed the Taichung City Police Bureau's Criminal Investigation Division, Technology Crime Investigation Team, to form a special task force. On April 15, searches were executed, and four involved bettors surnamed Chan, Lin, Hsu, and Huang were apprehended. Following interrogation, all four are being investigated for alleged violations of the Public Officials Election and Recall Act and criminal law, specifically for gambling on election results using telecommunication equipment, electronic communications, the internet, or similar methods. The investigation is ongoing to trace the source and expand the scope of related illegal activities.

Prosecutors stated that through the special task force's investigation, it was discovered that Polymarket utilizes the decentralized characteristics of blockchain technology and uses the stablecoin USDC, equivalent to the US dollar, as the betting medium.

Prosecutors pointed out that this betting pool is settled based on the political party that obtains the most local government mayoral and county magistrate seats, covering all 22 cities and counties nationwide. Given that virtual currencies have characteristics such as rapid cross-border flow, high anonymity, and difficulty in tracing, they have become a new channel for offshore funds and illegal betting pools to interfere in elections. Such activities create speculative atmospheres through fluctuating odds, which are sufficient to influence voters' perceptions and voting intentions, posing a significant threat to election fairness and democratic order.
