(CNA Reporter Taipei, 16th) According to Japanese media reports, data released by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) on the 15th showed that the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan in March reached 3.6189 million, a year-on-year increase of 3.5%, setting a historic high for the same period. However, influenced by the Chinese government's calls for citizens to avoid traveling to Japan, there were only 291,600 Chinese tourists visiting Japan in March, a massive decrease of 55.9% compared to the same period last year.
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that the decrease in Chinese tourists to Japan in March marks the fourth consecutive month that the number has been lower than the same period last year, and the 55.9% decline is larger than February's 45.2%. The number of Chinese tourists to Japan began to decrease in December 2025.
The report directly points out that although the number of Chinese tourists to Japan decreased in March, and the number of tourists from the Middle East also dropped by 30.6% year-on-year due to flight suspensions caused by the US-Iran war, the increase in tourists from other countries and regions compensated for the loss of Chinese and Middle Eastern tourists.
According to the data, the largest number of tourists visiting Japan in March were from South Korea, reaching 795,600, a year-on-year increase of 15.0%; Taiwanese tourists came in second with 652,200, with a high year-on-year growth rate of 24.9%.
In addition, the consumption amount of tourists visiting Japan from January to March this year was 2.3378 trillion yen (about NT$464.2 billion), a year-on-year increase of 2.5%, of which accommodation costs accounted for 36.7% and shopping accounted for 25.2%. Among them, the consumption amount of Taiwanese tourists ranked first, accounting for 16.6% of the total foreign tourist expenditure. (Editor: Chiu Kuo-chiang / Chou Hui-ying) 1150416
