(CNA, Geneva, 17th, Comprehensive Foreign Dispatch) Following the reduction of the sentence of imprisoned Myanmar democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi by the authorities today, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called on the Myanmar government to release Aung San Suu Kyi immediately and unconditionally.

According to an AFP report, Turk posted on the social media platform X: "Since the coup, all those subjected to unreasonable detention, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, must be released immediately and unconditionally. The endless violence against all the people of Myanmar must stop."

According to a separate report by Reuters, 80-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to 27 years in prison on multiple charges, including incitement, corruption, election fraud, and violation of the Official Secrets Act. Her allies say these charges are politically motivated, aimed at preventing her from continuing to participate in politics.

Aung San Suu Kyi's lawyer pointed out that her sentence has been reduced by one-sixth, but it is currently unclear whether the Nobel Peace Prize laureate will be able to serve the remainder of her sentence under house arrest.

Myanmar state media reported earlier that the new President Min Aung Hlaing approved the pardon of 4,335 prisoners, including former President Win Myint, which is the third time the authorities have announced such a move in the past six months.

The sentence reduction for Aung San Suu Kyi is part of an amnesty decree issued by Min Aung Hlaing, who led a military coup in 2021 that overthrew the elected government of Win Myint and Aung San Suu Kyi, plunging Myanmar into a nationwide civil war that continues to this day.
