(Central News Agency reporter Huang Kuo-fang, Chiayi City, 15th) A man named Xia was accused of driving and hitting a female cyclist to death in December last year. Xia fled the scene for 4 days before appearing, claiming he had a cold and fever at the time and did not know he had hit someone. However, the vehicle involved in the accident had slowed down and briefly stopped; the entire case has been concluded, and he has been indicted on charges of negligent homicide and other offenses, with a recommendation for a heavy sentence.
According to the indictment from the Chiayi District Prosecutors Office, 42-year-old Mr. Xia was driving on Zhongshan Road Sec. 2, Taibao City, Chiayi County, on the afternoon of December 19 last year, when he abruptly swerved to the right, directly colliding with Ms. Lin, who was cycling in the same direction. Ms. Lin fell to the ground immediately and, despite emergency medical treatment, was pronounced dead on December 24 of the same month.
Chiayi prosecutors stated that after the accident, Mr. Xia did not stay at the scene, nor did he notify the police or 119 ambulance, but instead drove away. He only appeared on December 23 of the same month to explain, claiming, "At that time, I had a cold, headache, and fever, and my limbs were weak, so I didn't know I had hit someone."
Chiayi prosecutors said that after reviewing intersection surveillance footage and the dashcam footage from the vehicle behind Mr. Xia's car, it was found that the brake lights of Mr. Xia's vehicle immediately lit up after the accident, and 14 seconds later, the vehicle behind him also honked its horn. It was judged that Mr. Xia was aware that he had hit someone while driving, but he still fled the scene.
The prosecutor stated that Mr. Xia is a construction worker with no fixed residence. Although dashcam footage from other vehicles showed his driving swerving left and right before the accident, he only appeared 4 days after the accident, making it impossible to measure his alcohol level. Coupled with Mr. Xia's post-offense evasive statements and poor attitude, in addition to being indicted for negligent homicide and hit-and-run, a heavy sentence is recommended.
