A months-long cross-border care operation was recently completed in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the Taiwanese community and charity groups worked together to accompany a 76-year-old solitary Taiwanese expat through his final stages of life. According to Yu Hsiang-kuang, chairman of the Gauteng Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the individual suffered from diabetes and required an emergency amputation in February following a fall and severe infection. Facing a lack of long-term care resources, Yu and Tzu Chi South Africa mobilized resources, raising over 80,000 Rand (approx. 150,000 TWD) for medical expenses and nursing home arrangements. Despite efforts to provide professional care at a center in Germiston and coordination with family in Taiwan, the expat's condition worsened in late March, leading to his death early this month. This case highlights the structural difficulties faced by elderly solitary expats in accessing medical and care resources.
