Hsinchu Man Sentenced to 2 Months for Drunken Assault on Taxi Driver and Police Chief

Hsinchu, April 14 (CNA) A man surnamed Duan in Hsinchu City was sentenced to two months in prison for obstructing official duties after assaulting a taxi driver and then a police station chief while intoxicated. The Hsinchu District Court issued the verdict on April 10. According to the court's judgment, on the evening of October 16 last year, Duan, after drinking at a bar, attacked taxi driver Chen on his way home. Chen then drove to the Nanmen Police Station of the Hsinchu City Police Bureau's Third Precinct to report the incident. Police Station Chief Hu Yu-jen initially arranged for Duan to rest, as he appeared disoriented from alcohol, while gathering information from Chen. When Chen stepped out to smoke, Hu followed to check on him. Upon returning to the station, Duan, allegedly agitated by alcohol, knowingly attacked Hu Yu-jen with his bare hands, obstructing official duties. Duan later stated he did not remember what happened. The judge considered Duan's agitated state due to alcohol and his assault on Hu Yu-jen, which obstructed the exercise of state authority. He was sentenced to two months imprisonment for obstructing official duties, which can be commuted to a fine. The verdict is appealable.
