(Central News Agency reporter Huang Qiaowen, Taipei 17th) The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) announced that in response to World Public Transport Day today, it is collaborating with 12 counties and cities and two railway companies to launch multiple preferential schemes. These include free rides on the Happy Bus in May, a 10% point bonus for High-Speed Rail weekday members, and double points for Taiwan Railways Administration weekday tickets for five days.
The MOTC, local governments, and transportation enterprises are jointly promoting nationwide or regional preferential activities. These include 194 townships with 515 Happy Bus routes (including Happy Taxi) guided and promoted by the MOTC's Directorate General of Highways, offering free rides in May.
For counties and cities, Taichung City is promoting Taichung Go ticket marketing, Tainan City has cross-industry cooperation plans, Kaohsiung City is promoting MeNGo carbon reduction activities, Kinmen County is promoting bus transfer discounts, while Yilan County, Hualien County, and Taitung County are promoting Taiwan Tourist Shuttle ticket lottery and experience activities.
Regarding the two railway companies, Taiwan Railways Administration Co., Ltd. will offer double points for weekday ticket purchases for members from May 25th to 29th, and a limited-time sale of NT$399 "Hualien-Taitung Two-Day Pass" in May. Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation will offer a 10% point bonus for weekday members in May.
"World Public Transport Day" is designated by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP). The MOTC's Institute of Transportation held a press conference, where MOTC Deputy Minister Chen Yen-po joined transportation heads from multiple co-organizing county and city governments across Taiwan and transportation enterprises to speak in sync with the global event.
Chen Yen-po stated that promoting public transportation is an important policy of the MOTC and a key tool and action for net-zero transformation to solve traffic congestion. Taking TPASS as an example, statistics show that the public transportation market share has increased from about 14.3% in 2022 to about 15.2% in 2024.
He said that from the perspective of transportation modes, rail transport has benefited significantly. Compared to the same period in 2022, rail transport volume increased by about 40% in January and February this year, bus transport volume grew by about 20%, and public bicycle systems like YouBike, which serve as the first and last mile, saw a growth of 138%.
Regarding carbon footprint accounting for travel behavior, the MOTC stated that in June, it will launch a green transportation service platform, combining TPASS data with the Transportation Data eXchange (TDX) standard data, to provide the public with daily carbon reduction queries, making carbon reduction "visible and quantifiable." It will also offer diverse feedback mechanisms to increase willingness to use public transportation, and allow enterprises to record employees' commuting carbon reduction achievements as an important basis for ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance reports.
In addition, Keelung City, New Taipei City, Taipei City, and Taoyuan City jointly promote "My Carbon Reduction Passbook 2.0," adding walking carbon reduction calculation functions and continuing to promote monthly gift exchange activities.
Chen Yen-po stated that public transportation not only improves traffic but also contributes to net-zero carbon reduction and transformation. In the past, it was difficult for the public to concretely feel their carbon reduction contributions. The MOTC will launch a green transportation service platform to digitize and visualize each ride through record-keeping.
He said that in addition to existing public transportation feedback schemes, the platform plans to reward individuals who contribute to carbon reduction in the future, hoping to encourage public response through a dual-engine driven approach. (Editor: Li Mingzong) 1150417
