KEELUNG (CNA) - Ma-ling Elementary School in Keelung City, with a history of a century, once faced the crisis of closure due to factors such as industrial transformation. The Buddhist Compassion Foundation assisted in its transformation into a publicly-run private experimental school. Over the past 10 years, it has integrated the school's ecological characteristics with life education and has been selected as an experimental demonstration base.

The Buddhist Compassion Foundation issued a press release today stating that Ma-ling Elementary School, which once thrived with the mining industry and had over 500 students, gradually faced closure as mining declined, populations migrated, and birth rates fell.

In 2012 (ROC year 101), Ma-ling Elementary School established a cooperative relationship with the Buddhist Compassion Foundation and began attempting cross-district enrollment. After the "Experimental Education Three Laws" were passed in 2015 (ROC year 104), it transformed into a publicly-run private experimental school.

Since 2016 (ROC year 105), the Buddhist Compassion Foundation has officially accepted the commission from the Keelung City Government, making Ma-ling Elementary School the first publicly-run private experimental school in the greater Taipei metropolitan area.

Ma-ling Elementary School's greatest feature is its proximity to Shishishan Mountain, abandoned mining sites, stone bridges, and other historical sites, as well as the natural ecosystem of the Malin Creek. The foundation and school encourage students through various activities to recognize local culture and the natural environment, integrating life education to learn about environmental protection and filial piety.

"Learning how to learn" is the core spirit of the autonomous inquiry curriculum promoted by the Buddhist Compassion Foundation and Ma-ling Elementary School. The school has planned different learning strategies for each grade level and allows students to practice them through real-world scenarios in thematic courses. The ultimate hope is that these strategies will become a "toolbox" for problem-solving, enabling students to become masters of their own learning.

Ma-ling Elementary School has recently received an "Excellent" rating in Keelung City's experimental education evaluation and was selected as an experimental demonstration base for "School-wide Positive Behavior Support." At the "Deep Cultivation for Ten Years, Art Blooms in Ma-ling" event held on April 10th, Principal Dong Hui-ping emotionally reviewed the arduous journey of the past decade, thanking the city government, the foundation, parents in the community, and academic experts for their collective support in achieving the impossible.
