Driver sentenced to 4 months, 2 years probation for fatal accident on National Highway 1 Hukou section due to unsafe distance

(Central News Agency reporter Guo Xuan-wen, Hsinchu County, April 14) A man surnamed Chen was driving on National Highway 1 Hukou section last year and failed to maintain a safe distance, colliding with the car in front. Ms. Cai, who was in the front car, suffered an intracranial hemorrhage after seeking medical attention and died two days later after surgery. The Hsinchu District Court sentenced Mr. Chen to 4 months imprisonment and 2 years probation for negligent homicide.

The Hsinchu District Court judgment, issued on the 10th, stated that on June 13 last year, Mr. Chen was driving northbound on National Highway 1 at the 92-kilometer mark (Hukou section, Hsinchu County). Due to failing to pay attention to the road conditions ahead and not maintaining a safe distance, he collided with a small car that had braked due to traffic, carrying Ms. Cai and others.

The judgment stated that after the incident, Ms. Cai had no obvious external injuries. Later, she traveled by car to Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for examination. That afternoon, she suddenly experienced a headache and vomiting. Examinations revealed left cerebral subdural hematoma, left cerebellar infarction, and other conditions. Ms. Cai underwent surgery the next day and died two days later due to traumatic intracranial hemorrhage caused by blunt head trauma.

The judge considered that Mr. Chen failed to comply with relevant road traffic safety regulations, leading to this accident, which not only caused the victim's severe injury and death but also brought immeasurable pain to the family who lost a loved one. However, considering that Mr. Chen confessed to the crime and reached a settlement with the family, he was sentenced to 4 months imprisonment and 2 years probation for negligent homicide.
