CHIAYI COUNTY (CNA reporter Tsai Chih-ming) – The 2026 Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage is scheduled to arrive in Chiayi County on April 20. To prevent fires, the Fire Department held a rescue drill at Xingang Fengtian Temple last night, enhancing consensus and rapport among temple staff, volunteer firefighters, and professional firefighters, enabling them to respond quickly in case of an incident.

The Chiayi County Fire Department issued a press release today stating that the 2026 Dajia Zhenlan Temple Mazu Pilgrimage is expected to depart on the evening of April 17, embarking on a 9-day, 8-night walking journey. It will enter Xingang Township, Chiayi County, on April 20, and a birthday celebration will be held at Fengtian Temple the following day.

The Fire Department said that to maintain safety during the event and protect Chiayi County's valuable religious and cultural assets, the Xingang Fire Brigade, in addition to pre-deploying duties before the event to enhance various rescue and emergency medical capabilities, also simulated possible fire scenarios. Last night, a fire rescue drill was conducted at Fengtian Temple, with approximately 60 participants from the Xingang Fire Brigade, Xingang Volunteer Fire Brigade, Emergency Medical Volunteer Fire Brigade, and Public Relations Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The Fire Department stated that the drill scenario involved a fire caused by setting off firecrackers inside Fengtian Temple, with dense smoke and flames rapidly spreading. The temple's initial attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful, and multiple people were injured due to crowding, leading to the fire escalating. After receiving a 119 call, the Fire Department immediately contacted the fire and volunteer personnel stationed inside Fengtian Temple to first use pre-deployed mobile pumps to enter the second-floor west wing for firefighting.

Furthermore, due to the crowded conditions, only small water tankers could enter to lay hoses for rescue. To also protect the historical building, water mist was used for firefighting. This drill allowed temple staff, volunteer firefighters, and professional firefighters to gain a deeper consensus and understanding of fire prevention.

The Fire Department urges the public and temple organizations to select firecrackers with approved labels and follow the instructions for use. They can also use firecracker sound effects instead of traditional firecrackers, which not only adds to the festive atmosphere but also considers economy and environmental protection, reducing the occurrence of fire accidents.
