(Central News Agency reporter Kao Hua-chien, Taipei, April 15) Former Taiwan People's Party legislator Li Chen-hsiu was expelled from her party, losing her at-large legislator status. The Central Election Commission (CEC) stated that it received an official letter from the Legislative Yuan this morning to cancel Li Chen-hsiu's membership, and will proceed with the replacement in accordance with Article 73, Paragraph 5 of the Public Officials Election and Recall Act.

Article 73, Paragraph 5 of the Public Officials Election and Recall Act stipulates that for legislator replacements, the Central Election Commission shall announce the list of replacements within 15 days from the date the Legislative Yuan's official letter canceling the membership is received.

Li Chen-hsiu was expelled from the Taiwan People's Party on the 13th. The CEC stated on the same day that it had received a letter from the Taiwan People's Party regarding Li Chen-hsiu's expulsion, and therefore, in accordance with the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, requested the Legislative Yuan to cancel Li Chen-hsiu's legislator membership.

The CEC confirmed that it received the official letter from the Legislative Yuan this morning to cancel Li Chen-hsiu's membership. It will subsequently proceed with the replacement in accordance with Article 73, Paragraph 5 of the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, and will retroactively approve the replacement at a future committee meeting.

The CEC currently has 4 commissioners. According to regulations, at least 5 commissioners are required to hold a committee meeting and make decisions. The Legislative Yuan voted in March to approve 4 nominees, including You Ying-lung, for CEC chairman, but rejected 3 nominees, including Hu Bo-yan, for deputy chairman. The Executive Yuan later stated that to ensure the smooth conduct of election affairs, it would handle the CEC appointment cases according to law and resubmit nominees, hoping the Legislative Yuan would exercise its consent power as soon as possible.
