(Central News Agency reporter Chang Chien-chung, Taipei, 13th) Memory controller chip manufacturer Silicon Motion held a groundbreaking ceremony today for its new Taipei corporate headquarters, which is expected to open in 2030. Regarding the memory market situation, Silicon Motion President Goc Chao-chang stated that the memory market is undergoing a structural shift, and next year's supply shortage may expand even further than this year.

Silicon Motion Technology signed a contract with Taiwan Railways Administration in 2021, obtaining qualifications for the urban renewal project of plot 732, subsection 2, Yucheng Section, Nangang District, Taipei City, and initiated relevant development work. This urban renewal project was approved by the Taipei City Government in April 2025, and building permits were obtained. The groundbreaking ceremony was held today, attended by Silicon Motion Chairman Wallace Kou and Taiwan Railways Administration Chairman Cheng Kuang-yuan.

Silicon Motion pointed out that the new headquarters base covers an area of approximately 1,026 ping, and plans to construct a steel-framed office building with 23 floors above ground and 5 floors below ground, featuring a curtain wall design, and meeting green building, smart building, and seismic standards. It is expected to open in 2030.

Silicon Motion stated that after the building is completed, it will be jointly owned by Taiwan Railways Administration and Silicon Motion in a 67% to 33% ratio. Silicon Motion will also lease Taiwan Railways Administration's share for a period of 20 years. The building design also includes public welfare facilities, with part of the first floor, the entire second floor, and third floor to be provided for use by the University of Taipei.

As for the memory market situation, Goc Chao-chang said in an interview that memory product prices have surged 4 to 10 times from August last year to March this year. The smaller the capacity, the higher the increase, and memory manufacturers' revenue and profit are also expected to grow by 2 to 3 times.

Goc Chao-chang stated that the memory market is undergoing a structural shift. In the future, in addition to mobile phones and personal computers, emerging artificial intelligence will be a major driver of the memory market.

Goc Chao-chang said that the memory market was in short supply this year, and next year, driven by strong demand from cloud service providers (CSPs) and Chinese internet operators, the supply-demand gap may further expand compared to this year. Silicon Motion will strive to help customers avoid the impact of supply chain disruptions. (Editor: Lin Chia-hsiang) 1150413
