After Colombia Tour, 'The Triple-Feature Film' Evolves and Returns to Taiwan for Screening

The film 'The Triple-Feature Film,' which was cast, shot, and edited during its exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei (MOCA), was nominated for the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival last year and was also screened at the Golden Horse Film Festival. The version premiered today at the Eslite Cinema is a feature-length film that combines content shot in Colombia and Taiwan. The next stop is planned for a tour and filming in Denmark, making it a film that can be added to at any time and will never be finished.

Su Hui-yu recalled during the post-screening talk today that in 2023, he was invited by MOCA Taipei to create an exhibition that integrated various genres such as visual arts, film, and performance. He then tried to 'open up a film for everyone to see.' Film is a narrative, and in the past, during a time of simple public morals, it was also a propaganda machine and a great format for conveying 'meaning.' 'So I believe that opening up a film is also a process of opening up how imagination and beliefs are constructed.'

The set was transformed into a film shooting site, and Su Hui-yu chose to package it in the form of a variety show to accommodate diverse themes and explore serious issues. During the viewing, the audience felt like they were watching an over-an-hour-long variety show, including new book introductions and social skits, using pseudonyms to discuss politics, international power struggles, and technology amidst banter. In the segment from the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art, onlookers can even be seen being filmed, resembling a live audience of a variety show.

Su Hui-yu stated that the Russo-Ukrainian War broke out in 2022, and the Gaza War in 2023. Taiwan is on the first island chain, and he is also an avid follower of political talk shows, so he added many issues to the script. For example, the film touches on geopolitics, the global contradiction between left and right, and a skit that explores the Palace of Justice siege in Colombia, echoing the process of transitional justice.

The curator during the 'The Triple-Feature Film's' run at MOCA Taipei was Eugenio Viola, the current artistic director of the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art, who was also the driving force behind the exhibition's move to Bogotá last year. Su mentioned that the curator believed that as long as the exhibition tours, filming can continue, allowing the audience to experience the process of film shooting and production during the exhibition.

During the exhibition at MOCA Taipei, a large amount of footage was accumulated at once, so 'The Triple-Feature Film' could not be screened as a feature-length film on site at that time. At the premiere today, Su said he was very happy to watch the work in a movie theater, which made the concept more complete and fulfilled the initial idea of 'giving birth to a film in a museum.'
