(Central News Agency reporter Li Zongxian, Bangkok, July 16 special dispatch) Reuters cited United Nations agencies today, reporting that two vessels carrying over 500 people have recently capsized off the coast of Myanmar. Most passengers were Rohingya, and it is feared that there may be no survivors.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued a joint statement saying, "According to preliminary information, these two boats departed from Rakhine State, Myanmar, in late June. Most of the passengers were Rohingya, and some were reportedly from refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.
The UN agencies stated that the first boat, carrying about 250 people, lost contact shortly after departure. The second boat, carrying about 280 people, is believed to have sunk on July 8 off the coast of Myanmar's Ayeyarwady Region.
The statement indicates that over 500 people were aboard the two vessels, and there may be no survivors.
The statement noted, 'Although the incident and casualty figures have not yet been officially confirmed, UNHCR and IOM are deeply concerned about the potentially severe loss of life.' (Edited by Zhang Zhixuan) 1150716
