(Central News Agency, reporter Hsu Chih-wei, Taipei, July 9) The list of new academicians for Academia Sinica was unveiled today. TSMC Senior Vice President Wu Hsien-yang was elected as an academician in the Engineering Sciences group, making him the third Academia Sinica academician from TSMC. He led the development of four CMOS technology platforms at TSMC and is recognized as one of the most outstanding integration leaders.
Academia Sinica held a press conference today to announce the list of the 35th academicians and honorary academicians, with a total of 19 new academicians and 3 honorary academicians elected. Among them, 8 are female academicians and all honorary academicians are female, marking the highest number of female awardees in history.
The Engineering Sciences group of Academia Sinica's 35th cohort of new academicians includes six individuals: TSMC Senior Vice President of R&D/Technology Development Wu Hsien-yang, National Tsing Hua University Professor of Chemical Engineering Song Hsin-wen, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering Chang Yi, Delta Electronics, Inc. Chief Technology Officer David Kuo, National Cheng Kung University Adjunct Professor of Aerospace Engineering Kuo Cheng-shan, and University of Tennessee, Knoxville Professor Kai-Hui Liao.
Wu Hsien-yang is the third Academia Sinica academician from TSMC, following Lin Pen-chien and Yu Chen-hua. At TSMC, Wu Hsien-yang led the development of four advanced CMOS technology platforms and is recognized as one of TSMC's most outstanding integration leaders. He drove the mass production of 28nm, 16nm, 7nm, and 3nm process nodes, which have been crucial for TSMC to maintain its global leadership in the field of logic integrated circuit manufacturing.
In an interview, Wu Hsien-yang stated that being in an R&D unit, he has always maintained a cautious attitude in developing next-generation processes. The semiconductor outlook is very promising, and technological leadership is the most important leading indicator for how TSMC can continue to stay ahead.
Regarding TSMC's continuous breakthroughs and progress, Wu Hsien-yang believes that liking the work is very important. Even when encountering various challenges, each breakthrough represents growth. He also encourages all personnel with a mindset of continuous growth to move forward in R&D work.
Chang Yi has long been dedicated to compound semiconductors, including core areas such as high-speed, low-power III-V/Si integrated devices and gallium nitride high-frequency and power devices. He has promoted technological links with Taiwanese industry leaders like TSMC and Foxconn, while also collaborating with international companies such as Intel and Samsung to align the development of materials, processes, and new electronic components with cutting-edge international technology.
Chang Yi mentioned that compound semiconductors have wide applications in fields such as AI, satellite communications, and drones. These technologies require further development of technologies beneficial to Taiwan based on solid principles and foundations. He also hopes to see more young people engage in related research.
David Kuo, former acting president of National Taiwan University, specializes in flash memory storage systems. Addressing the scalability limitations of traditional hardware solutions like error correction codes, he proposed using software technology to distribute read, write, and erase interference across the chip space, integrating flash memory read/write flexibility into hardware-software co-design. This has led to pioneering solutions and fundamental contributions to the R&D of endurance technologies. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150709
