(CNA Taipei, July 4) After 13 seasons and two teams, Taishang Eagles pitcher Chiang Cheng-yen achieved a career milestone of 1,000 innings pitched today with a quality start of 6 innings and 2 runs allowed. He becomes the third local left-handed pitcher in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) to reach this mark. However, his team ultimately lost 4-5 to the Uni-President Lions.
Chiang Cheng-yen began his career in 2013 after being drafted by the Lions. He started appearing in the first team in 2014. Through a trade, he moved to the Taishang Eagles in 2024, becoming a crucial starting pitcher for this emerging team. In the past two seasons, he pitched a full 110 innings each, and with today's game, he had accumulated 997 career innings before the start of play.
Facing his former team as a starter today, Chiang Cheng-yen reached the milestone within the first 3 innings. He ultimately pitched 6 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs. The only earned run was from a home run hit by Chiu Chih-cheng in the first inning. He recorded 6 strikeouts, and his ERA after the game was 1.99.
Chiang Cheng-yen is the 18th pitcher in CPBL history to reach 1,000 career innings. Before him, only Wang Yi-cheng (1069.2 innings) and Lin Ying-chieh (1055.2 innings) had achieved this as local left-handed pitchers.
Although the Eagles' offense provided 4 runs of support in the first 3 innings, Chiang Cheng-yen's chance for a win slipped away after he exited the game. In the top of the 8th inning, the Lions tied the game with Lin Tzu-hao's two-run triple. With two outs, Chen Chung-yu's single gave them the lead.
