(Central News Agency, Reporter Lu Kang-chun, Hsinchu City, July 4) The case of carcinogen benzopyrene exceeding the standard in Chung Lien's "Soybean Salad Oil" has raised food safety concerns. The Hsinchu County Government inspected a total of 34 businesses selling and catering within its jurisdiction today, confirming that none sold or used the problematic oil.

The Hsinchu County Government issued a press release stating that the Hsinchu County Health Bureau yesterday tracked the quantities of recalled products by downstream manufacturers, confirmed the inventory status of the problematic oil, and investigated general catering sales channels. A total of 4 manufacturers, 20 catering businesses, and 5 retail businesses were inspected, and all have completed recalls.

The Health Bureau pointed out that in the second wave of action today, 5 retail businesses and 29 food retailers, market vendors, and catering businesses, meaning places where the public most easily comes into contact with food sources such as small eateries, buffets, and bento shops, were inspected, and no use of the problematic oil was found.

The Health Bureau reminds the public that if they purchase affected products announced by the Food and Drug Administration, they should stop using them. It is recommended to reduce cooking habits such as high-temperature grilling, smoking, and excessive deep-frying to lower the risk of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzopyrene.

The Health Bureau stated that food businesses should implement self-management to ensure products comply with health and safety regulations. If a product is found to be hazardous to health and safety, they should proactively stop selling it, carry out recalls, and self-report. Failure to report in accordance with regulations will result in a fine of not less than NT$30,000 and not more than NT$3 million for violating the Food Safety Act. (Editor: Lin Shu-hui) 1150704
