Middle East Conflict Sparks Energy Crisis; Modi Says India Overcame It Through Policy and Diplomacy

(Central News Agency, Reporter Li Jin-wei, New Delhi, July 4) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today that the global energy shortage caused by the Middle East conflict is the biggest energy crisis of the 21st century, and stated that India has successfully overcome it through diplomatic efforts, policy interventions, and strategic planning.

After inaugurating a refinery in Rajasthan, India today, Modi said that the Middle East conflict has thrown the world into turmoil, with several major economies struggling to cope with an unprecedented crisis. However, he emphasized that India has been largely unaffected after the government made swift decisions and responded.

According to the Indian news agency ANI, Modi said that India made the right decisions at every step, not only assessing the crisis in a timely manner and formulating effective strategies but also leveraging its diplomatic strength to address the challenges. "India has overcome the biggest energy crisis of the 21st century."

Modi mentioned that despite some people taking advantage of the crisis to spread rumors and create panic, the Indian government continued its efforts to ensure an uninterrupted energy supply. He said that the scope of the Indian government's efforts, the resilience shown, and the policy and diplomatic interventions taken during that period "are enough to be written in history."

India Today also reported that Modi said the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz nearly triggered a major energy crisis in India, but the nation was well-prepared and responded through diplomatic negotiations, ultimately averting the crisis.

"Our diplomatic relations with other countries helped us overcome the crisis, and India's diplomacy showed its strength during that period," Modi said, adding that India successfully obtained fuel from nearly 40 countries.

Modi pointed out that even though global supply chains faced pressure, India's domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply was not interrupted, and the price of commercial cylinder LPG has been significantly reduced recently, easing the burden on businesses. He emphasized that the Indian government controlled the LPG supply crisis in just 7 days.

He also mentioned that Indian public sector enterprises incurred losses exceeding 750 billion rupees (approximately 251.5 billion New Taiwan dollars) during that period. With the government bearing the financial burden, consumers were protected from the impact of soaring global fuel prices.
