(CNA, Reporter Wang Shu-fen, Taipei, July 3) The Ministry of Agriculture announced today that agricultural losses from two waves of heavy rain in June have reached nearly NT$680 million, with Pingtung County accounting for over NT$300 million, the highest among all affected areas.
The Ministry of Agriculture issued a press release stating that statistics compiled by the Ministry's Food and Agriculture Administration, Fisheries Agency, and Department of Animal Industry, based on reports from various municipalities and county governments, show agricultural losses from the heavy rain in late June reaching NT$546.95 million as of 5 PM today. Combined with the losses from the heavy rain between June 8th and mid-June, the total agricultural losses for June have reached NT$677.41 million.
The Ministry of Agriculture reported that Pingtung County suffered the most from the June heavy rain, with losses amounting to NT$312.54 million. This was followed by Chiayi County with NT$95.31 million, Kaohsiung City with NT$81.49 million, Yunlin County with NT$51.17 million, Changhua County with NT$47.72 million, Tainan City with NT$42.65 million, Taoyuan City with NT$19.17 million, and Hsinchu County with NT$15.69 million. Other counties and cities incurred losses below NT$10 million.
The heavy rain in late June was more severe than the previous wave. The Ministry of Agriculture's statistics indicate that agricultural product losses amounted to NT$323.09 million, with an affected crop area of 4,303 hectares and a damage severity of 23%. The main crops affected were guava, followed by papaya, banana, forage grass, and orchids.
Livestock losses are estimated at NT$24.94 million, primarily affecting chickens, followed by ducks and pigs. Fishery losses are estimated at NT$186.48 million, mainly affecting hard clams, followed by freshwater prawns and threadfin bream.
Additionally, there were losses of NT$12.23 million from farmland erosion and burial, and NT$0.21 million from agricultural facilities. (Editor: Chen Ching-fang) 1150703
