(Central News Agency, reporter Kuo Hsuan-lun, Hsinchu County, July 3) A man surnamed Wu, who was a fugitive for a firearms case, rammed a police car and fled when stopped by Hsinchu County police for an inquiry. Police fired 5 shots to subdue him and found drugs such as methamphetamine in the car. The Hsinchu District Court sentenced him to 7 months in prison for obstructing official business. The drug charges will be tried separately.

A Hsinchu District Court ruling dated June 30 stated that a man surnamed Wu was a fugitive for a firearms case. Hsinchu County police recently spotted Wu driving suspiciously during a patrol and approached him for an inquiry. To evade arrest, Wu drove away.

The ruling stated that when police pursued the car to Shinsing Road in Hsinfeng Township, Wu rammed the police car to escape, and officers fired 4 shots to stop him. When the pursuit continued to Kuangming 6th Road in Zhubei City, Wu again rammed a police motorcycle, and an officer fired 1 more shot at the front right tire before arresting him. They found 1 packet each of methamphetamine and heroin in the car.

The judge believed that Wu failed to recognize that public officials performing their duties according to law represent the state in exercising public authority. He intentionally rammed a police motorcycle with his vehicle, obstructing official business with violence and arbitrarily challenging public authority, treating state power as nothing.

The judge stated that Wu's actions severely impacted social order and the execution of public authority. He was sentenced to 7 months in prison for obstructing official business while driving a motor vehicle. The case can be appealed. The drug charges will be tried separately.
