(Central News Agency Paris, July 3rd, Combined News Sources) A heatwave is ravaging Europe. During the high-temperature period from June 15th to June 30th, 410 million people in Europe, equivalent to more than two-thirds of the population, experienced temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius or higher for at least one day. Furthermore, Belgium's excess deaths in June due to high temperatures exceeded 1,000, with a 39% increase compared to previous years.
According to an analysis by Agence France-Presse based on historical daily maximum temperature and population data, approximately 320 million people also experienced similar high temperatures during the record-breaking 16-day heatwave in August 2003.
Preliminary data from Belgium's Federal Public Service Health shows that during the heatwave from June 18th to June 29th, Belgium's death toll was 39% higher than normal, with 1,222 excess deaths, nearly half of whom were elderly individuals aged 85 and above.
