US Navy Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing in Arabian Sea; 3 Rescued, 1 Missing

(CNA Washington, July 1st, Combined Reports) A U.S. Navy helicopter made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea today, with one crew member missing and three others injured but in stable condition. The Navy stated there are currently no indications that the incident was caused by hostile action.

According to reports from Reuters and USA Today, the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. Fifth Fleet announced on social media that an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter, assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, made a water landing at approximately 3:30 AM Eastern Time on July 1st. Three crew members have been recovered and are in stable condition.

U.S. forces are currently conducting a full-scale search and rescue operation for the fourth crew member whose whereabouts are unknown. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Navy officials stated, "There are currently no indications that this emergency was caused by hostile action."

Even for experienced pilots, a helicopter water landing carries high risks due to the high center of gravity, making it prone to capsizing upon entering the water.

According to the Naval Air Systems Command, the MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter's missions include maritime warfare, combat support, humanitarian disaster relief, and combat search and rescue.

On the 23rd of last month, U.S. Central Command stated that the USS George H.W. Bush was one of two aircraft carriers continuously operating in the Arabian Sea region, and "U.S. forces will continue to deploy and remain vigilant."

Despite a fragile ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, tensions in the Middle East have continued to escalate in recent days. Since the joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28th ignited hostilities, thousands have died, including 13 U.S. military personnel.

Weeks ago, Iran shot down a U.S. Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. Fortunately, the two pilots on board were unharmed. The U.S. subsequently launched retaliatory airstrikes against Iran on June 9th.
