(CNA, Taipei, July 1) The Central Weather Administration (CWA) announced today that two typhoons may form within the next 24 hours. The system near Guam is predicted to strengthen into a "strong and robust" typhoon. Tomorrow, the entire island will experience extreme heat, with Pingtung and Tainan bracing for temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius.
According to the CWA's latest information, there are currently two tropical depressions at sea. One is located near Guam (approximately 4,600 kilometers east of Eluanbi), and the other is in the South China Sea (approximately 900 kilometers south-southwest of Eluanbi). Both have the potential to develop into typhoons.
CWA forecaster Tseng Chao-cheng told CNA that the two tropical depressions have a chance to strengthen into typhoons within the next 24 hours, becoming the ninth and tenth typhoons of the year, Bavi and Maysak, respectively. The South China Sea system will move northwest and is expected to make landfall in Guangdong or Guangxi around July 3rd or 4th as a weak typhoon, posing no threat to Taiwan.
Regarding the Guam system, Tseng Chao-cheng pointed out that due to a favorable environment for development, it will continue to strengthen after becoming a typhoon. It is predicted to reach typhoon strength by this weekend and, based on current data analysis, may have a storm radius of up to 350 kilometers, making it a "strong and robust" typhoon. It will continue to move towards the Ryukyu Islands over the next seven days. Its impact on Taiwan and whether a sea typhoon warning will be issued will depend on its northward turn, with forecasts from various countries still diverging, requiring continued observation.
Tseng Chao-cheng mentioned that the weather will be relatively stable over the next week. From tomorrow until the 8th, most areas will be cloudy to sunny, with localized afternoon thunderstorms. Tomorrow's afternoon thunderstorms are expected in areas north of Hsinchu, Yunlin, Chiayi, and mountainous regions. Mountainous areas north of the central region may experience locally heavier rainfall.
Tseng Chao-cheng said that rainfall will decrease on July 3rd and 4th, with localized brief afternoon thunderstorms in mountainous areas. From the 5th to the 8th, the wind will shift to southerly, with localized brief afternoon thunderstorms in areas north of the central region and other mountainous areas.
In terms of temperature, Tseng Chao-cheng stated that high temperatures will be around 32 to 35 degrees Celsius across the island over the next week. However, localized temperatures above 36 degrees Celsius are still possible in the Greater Taipei Basin, near mountains in central and southern Taiwan, and the Hualien-Taitung Rift Valley.
The CWA issued a high-temperature advisory this afternoon, indicating hot and sunny weather across the island. Tomorrow, Pingtung County will be under a red alert, with a chance of continuous extreme temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius. Tainan City will be under an orange alert, bracing for extreme temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius. Taipei City, New Taipei City, Kaohsiung City, Yilan County, and Hualien County will be under an orange alert, with a chance of continuous temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius. Changhua County, Yunlin County, and Chiayi County will be under a yellow alert, with caution advised for temperatures above 36 degrees Celsius.
Today's highest temperature was 38.6 degrees Celsius in Zhutian Township, Pingtung County. Other notable high temperatures included 37.1 degrees Celsius in Fengshan District, Kaohsiung City, and 36.6 degrees Celsius in East District, Chiayi City.
Tseng Chao-cheng reminded the public that from August 8th onwards, coastal areas of the Keelung North Coast, eastern Taiwan (including Green Island and Orchid Island), and the Hengchun Peninsula should be aware of long swells. (Editor: Li Heng-shan) 1150701
