(CNA, Reporter Lai Yu-chen, Taipei, June 30) The government is vigorously promoting tourism as a pillar of national development. Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun stated today that Taiwan will continue to strengthen its tourism brand image by attracting global visitors through half-day transit tours, convention and exhibition-related tourism, and cruise tourism. The targets for this year are 9.3 million tourist arrivals and a total tourism output value of NT$900 billion.
The Executive Yuan, in a press release, stated that Cheng Li-chiun, presiding over the 5th meeting of the "Executive Yuan Tourism Industry Revitalization Consultation Conference" today, pointed out that tourism is an important soft power for Taiwan. Following the launch of the "Peak of the Tropic of Cancer Flagship Project - Smiling South Bay IN Taiwan" last year, the "Trek Taiwan Twalk" project will be launched this year, aiming to establish "Smiling South Bay" and "Trek Taiwan" as Taiwan's two new international tourism brand names.
Cheng Li-chiun said that the government will actively strive to host more major international exhibitions and conferences in Taiwan. By integrating cross-ministerial resources for international exhibitions and conferences, the goal of "driving tourism through exhibitions and promoting consumption through tourism" will be achieved. Concurrently, in line with Premier Cho Jung-tai's policy of expanding domestic demand, a "Tourism Dual-Wheel Drive" plan will be introduced. Through weekday domestic travel discounts and strengthening international tourism momentum, the market scale will be expanded and domestic tourism industry growth will be promoted.
She stated that the government will continue to strengthen Taiwan's tourism brand image this year, attracting global visitors through half-day transit tours, convention and exhibition-related tourism, and cruise tourism, with the targets of 9.3 million tourist arrivals and a total tourism output value of NT$900 billion.
Regarding international exhibitions and conferences driving tourism, Cheng Li-chiun instructed that: first, all ministries should actively seek to host important international exhibitions and conferences within their respective domains, with the full support of the Executive Yuan; second, efforts should be made to expand the participation of international individuals in attractive international events held in Taiwan and to actively promote them; third, through comprehensive planning and supporting measures, international participants attending exhibitions and events in Taiwan should be encouraged to extend their stays and enhance their travel experiences.
Cheng Li-chiun also mentioned that the Executive Yuan sent a letter to all ministries on the 24th, stipulating that when organizing major international events in the future, travel information should be provided simultaneously during the event promotion and registration stages, allowing international individuals to plan their itineraries in Taiwan in advance and expand the spillover effects of international exhibition and conference activities.
Regarding the direction of the "Tourism Dual-Wheel Drive" plan, Cheng Li-chiun stated that this is an important policy for the Executive Yuan to expand domestic demand. She requested the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to actively promote the two major plans of weekday domestic travel discounts and strengthening international tourism momentum, encouraging people to travel and stay overnight on weekdays, and to attract more international tourists to Taiwan to increase market scale and promote economic growth. However, as the current fiscal year's budget has not yet been reviewed and approved, and it is currently the peak summer travel season, she hopes that the Legislative Yuan will expedite the passage of the budget so that the policies can be implemented.
For the "Trek Taiwan Twalk" project, Cheng Li-chiun requested the Tourism Administration to form a "Trek Taiwan Working Group" with relevant ministries to accelerate related work, with a target launch in May 2027. Regarding Taiwan's hosting of the "World Trails Conference" in October 2028, Cheng Li-chiun asked the Tourism Administration of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to actively assist in organizing the event and to leverage this opportunity to promote the beauty of Taiwan.
