(Taipei, June 30, CNA, via London, June 30, Reuters) Princess Catherine of the United Kingdom completed the arduous UK "Three Peaks Challenge" over the weekend, climbing the highest peaks of England, Scotland, and Wales within 24 hours to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Hospital, where she received cancer treatment two years ago.
The "Three Peaks Challenge" involves a total ascent of 3,064 meters, according to CNN. Princess Catherine said in a video released on June 28, "Many people have asked me why I've taken on this challenge. Part of it is for personal reasons, I'm so grateful to still be here and have the strength to be able to take on these climbs."
"But more importantly, it's about giving back and paying tribute to all the incredible work that's being done up and down the country... I've met some wonderful people who are living with cancer or have survived cancer, and I know firsthand how tough that journey is, and I wanted to take this opportunity to do my bit to contribute to all the wonderful work that's being done."
Kate, 44, announced in March 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy, just two months after undergoing major abdominal surgery. After nearly a year, Kate announced that her condition had eased and she has since gradually resumed her royal duties.
Kate has also been actively promoting the work of the Royal Marsden Hospital and finding ways to support cancer patients. Kensington Palace announced last year that Kate and her husband, Prince William, jointly serve as patrons of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
Kate also issued a statement through Kensington Palace, saying she hopes to "explore life after cancer" by undertaking difficult actions like the "Three Peaks Challenge," as cancer can "change your mindset and feelings, and profoundly affect every aspect of your life." She also attached a link to the Royal Marsden Hospital's donation webpage. (Compiled by Chang Cheng-chiu) 0630115
