The 2026 FIFA World Cup is approaching its knockout stage, with the competition for the eight available slots for third-placed teams intensifying. South Korea’s progression remains uncertain.

According to The Guardian, the expanded 48-team tournament allows the top two teams from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams to advance to the Round of 32.

To date, 19 teams have secured their places, including Argentina, France, Germany, Mexico, Norway, the United States, Colombia, Canada, Switzerland, Brazil, Morocco, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, and Australia. Eight teams have been eliminated, including Haiti, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, Panama, Qatar, the Czech Republic, and Curaçao.

The ranking criteria for the 12 third-placed teams are determined by points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play points, and FIFA rankings. Currently, Sweden, Ecuador, and Bosnia and Herzegovina have successfully qualified through this route, leaving five spots remaining.

South Korea concluded its group stage with a 1-win, 2-loss record, securing 3 points and finishing third in Group A. With other groups yet to complete their matches, the South Korean team faces the risk of being overtaken by other contenders, which could result in their elimination from the tournament.
