ARLINGTON — Japan secured a 1-1 draw against Sweden in their final FIFA World Cup group stage match, clinching second place in Group F and advancing to the Round of 32. Japan is now scheduled to face Brazil in the upcoming knockout stage.
According to Agence France-Presse, the match, held in Texas with an attendance of 70,000, saw increased intensity in the second half. Daizen Maeda put Japan ahead shortly after the break, but Anthony Elanga equalized for Sweden only minutes later. Japan faced significant pressure in the closing minutes as Sweden’s Alexander Isak and Elanga nearly scored during stoppage time.
In the final standings of Group F, the Netherlands finished first with 7 points, followed by Japan with 5 points, and Sweden with 4 points. Tunisia was eliminated with 0 points. Under manager Graham Potter, Sweden also qualified for the Round of 32 as the third-placed team.
The Netherlands, who defeated Tunisia 3-1, will face Morocco in Monterrey, Mexico, in their next match. Japan will travel to Houston, USA, to compete against Brazil.
