Central News Agency (CNA), Taipei, June 26. Following severe torrential rainfall across Taiwan, the Ministry of Economic Affairs reported that among 522 previously flooded locations, only six low-lying areas in Pingtung County remain submerged. The Water Resources Agency (WRA) has deployed 35 large-scale mobile pumps to Pingtung to expedite water drainage.
The WRA stated that Pingtung experienced record-breaking precipitation, with 48-hour cumulative rainfall exceeding 900mm and hourly intensity reaching 134mm. This extreme weather event exceeded the design capacity of local flood protection infrastructure. Water levels have begun to recede as the rain eased, with remaining stagnant water being addressed by mechanical pumping.
The heavy rainfall caused significant damage in Pingtung, including a levee breach in Wandan Township and a bridge collapse in Wanluan Township. Due to persistent flooding and transportation disruptions, the Pingtung County Government announced that work and classes will be suspended on June 27 for six townships: Donggang, Xinyuan, Nanzhou, Linbian, Kanding, and Jiadong.
