Taipei, June 24 (CNA) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan issued a sharp rebuttal today against the latest comments from China’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), which claimed that the unification of China would not harm Taiwan's economic interests. MOFA condemned the statement as lacking basic diplomatic common sense and reaffirmed that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other.
A spokesperson for China's TAO previously stated that "China's unification will not harm the legitimate interests of any country, including their economic interests in Taiwan." In response, MOFA emphasized that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China are sovereign states, and neither is subordinate to the other. Taiwan is a democratic society, and its future must be decided by its 23 million citizens, not by Beijing.
MOFA further stated that Taiwan conducts diplomatic engagements based on its national sovereignty and contributes actively to global peace and prosperity. As a key partner in the international community, Taiwan does not require Beijing's approval to engage with other nations or to participate in international activities. The Ministry affirmed that it will continue to defend national sovereignty and work to expand substantive relations with democratic partners to ensure stability across the Taiwan Strait.
