BRUSSELS, June 23 (CNA) — The Belgian national team’s search for its first win in this year's World Cup continues, prompting concerns among fans regarding the team's path to the knockout stage. Belgian media outlets have transitioned into analysts, detailing the various scenarios required for the team to advance or face elimination.
Following a draw against Iran and a victory by Egypt over New Zealand in Group G, Belgium currently sits in third place. Despite being favored to finish at the top of the group pre-tournament, the team now faces a complex road to qualification.
The Brussels Times reported that Belgium’s path to the top spot requires both a win against New Zealand in the final group match and a draw between Iran and Egypt, alongside superior goal difference compared to Egypt. Should their statistics fall short of Egypt’s, they would advance as the group runner-up.
In this year's expanded format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups qualify automatically, while the eight best third-placed teams will also advance to the knockout stage. Belgium currently ranks fourth among the third-placed teams, keeping them within the safety zone, though final round results introduce significant volatility.
If Belgium loses to New Zealand, they risk falling out of the top eight third-placed teams, making their survival dependent on a narrow mathematical margin. The report further notes that should Belgium advance as a runner-up, they could face Paraguay or Australia in the Round of 32, with a potential Round of 16 clash against defending champions Argentina.
