BRUSSELS — As the United States and Iran sign a memorandum of understanding to de-escalate Middle Eastern tensions, Iranian-Belgian Member of Parliament Darya Safai has criticized the move as a 'temporary ceasefire' that fails to address the underlying threats posed by the Iranian regime.
In an exclusive telephone interview with Central News Agency (CNA), Safai argued that with US elections approaching in November, the agreement is primarily a tactical pause rather than a long-term solution. She emphasized that the document fails to address critical security concerns, including Iran's long-range missile programs, its support for regional proxy forces, and the management of its 60% enriched uranium stockpiles.
Safai noted that while international sanctions have significantly weakened the regime since February, any premature easing of economic pressure would provide the Iranian government with resources to reinvest in groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, thereby exacerbating regional instability. She maintains that the regime has lost its legitimacy both domestically and internationally, and predicts its eventual collapse as the Iranian people continue their struggle for democratic change.
